Blast from the past
Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 28th
Two unusual games on this date. In 1997 we had a rare competitive first team game with neighbours Stansted at Rhodes Avenue. It was in the Eastern Floodlight Competition which was treated much like the county cup games today – a first team game but with the chance to give a game to fringe or squad players. Even without a full strength team we comfortable beat Stansted.
Further back to 1985 we find a game which couldn’t happen today – a second replay. We had drawn Bath City away in the FA Trophy. At the time Bath were a division above us so it was a good achievement to draw the first game at Twerton Park 1-1. The weather then intervened and it was almost two weeks until the replay, on a Thursday, which was also drawn when with Blues 2-0 down with 9 minutes remaining a great comeback saw the game finish 2-2. At this point the teams could either toss a coin for venue in the 2nd replay or if they could not agree it would go to a neutral ground. Blues called correctly in the coin toss and the 2nd replay was scheduled for the following Monday.
We were not having a good season, being close to the relegation zone in the Isthmian Premier Division while Bath were riding high in the Gola League and at this point the higher ranked team managed to overcome the underdogs winning 2-1 and we did not get to host Cheltenham Town in the 2nd Round. Ironically we did play Cheltenham in the FA Trophy the following season.
A more routine game saw us visit Hampton in 2017 for a Conference South game. After an even start the home side took the lead when Brenden Kiernan hits a cracking half volley from 30 yards into the roof of Blues’ net.
While that goal had a hint of fortune about it their second two minutes later was done to poor marking as Alfie Pavey was left unmarked to head home a corner. Richens headed over in a rare Blues attack, but although the visitors had plenty of the ball, the game was effectively over as a contest in the 25th minute when marking at a corner was again non-existent, allowing Nathan Collier to head home.
Cundle, Aaron Greene and Phil Walsh all had chances in the closing stages of the first half but the hosts regained control after the break and made it 4-0 in the 56th minute when Harry Voss did well to stop a powerful Kieren Casey effort only for the ball to fall into the path of Josh Murphy who fired home.
Two minutes later Blues got on the scoresheet as Barnwell’s header was handled on the line by Wesley Fonguck, and after the home player had been dismissed the on-load Dagenham & Redbridge forward converted a well-struck penalty.
Alex Stephenson and Paul Rogers both had chances to reduce the arrears but the visitors never looked likely to stage a comeback and the only bright point was that four of the other bottom six sides also lost.
