Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 13th

We haven’t played on this date since 2007 when we faced Yeading in the FA Trophy second round. As this was the stage where the draw went national, it was disappointing to be facing league opponents and to be drawn away. Still, we were challenging for promotion that season so this looked a very winnable tie.

However the home side sealed victory with goals at either end of the 90 minutes. There was a similarity between them. In both cases Blues’ were beaten for pace down the left, leading to low and accurate crosses and shots from close range. Jeff Goulding was the provider of the crosses and Marlon Patterson was on hand to slot both crosses into the net from close range.

In between the goals, the weather was took centre stage. Blues had the benefit of the wind behind them for the first half, but the second half saw Yeading assisted by gusts that at times made it difficult for Blues to hit the ball forward. Unfortunately the players didn’t help themselves by trying to play the ball in the air, only to find the passes blowing hopelessly astray.

Dave Collis was easily the pick of the Blues and his free kick on 18 minutes was Stortford’s first effort on goal. Rob Gilman might have done better with a close range header from Gareth Gwillim’s free kick on the half hour mark. However, in a fairly dire first half, Richard Howell’s dramatic tumble lightened spirits with fans split as to whether or not the contact made deserved a red card for the offender. Unfortunately the referee sided with the supporters who felt that Howell had made rather a meal of the challenge.

Jordan Fowler replaced Danny Morgan at the break and Jack Midson was pushed up to partner Roy Essandoh – but to little effect. In fact, with the strong wind, Yeading were able to push up and hold a high defensive line, rely on breaks and enjoy the best of the chances. Bobby Behzadi’s shot after 51 minutes was not far wide of Wright’s right hand post. Rob Gilman provided a glimmer of hope with a strong run into the box and shot that forced Luke Blackmore into his first save after an hour. Blackmore was again in action minutes later, foiling Blues’ best move. From a throw-in Jack Midson flicked the ball on to Essandoh who shot wide of Blackmore, but the keeper stretched to tip the ball round his post and out for a corner.

Down the other end, Chris Wright had to be on his toes to save from Goulding when the striker turned on the proverbial sixpence and shot from well inside the box. Wright was again called into action when Yeading were awarded a penalty. Blues’ players were clearly not pleased with the decision and two were booked for letting the referee know. Behzadi placed the spot kick low to his left, but Wright saved magnificently.

If Blues’ supporters thought this might be a late turning point, they were wrong. Within 2 minutes, Yeading had doubled their lead and put the outcome of the tie beyond any doubt. There was still time though for Blackmore to produce a superb save from Essandoh’s close range header before the final whistle and Stortford’s exit from the Trophy.
