Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on January 3rd

In 2011 we had a short trip on this date to Bromley for a league game. The match got off to a lively start with the hosts taking the lead in the fourth minute. Ross Kitteridge was only able to push out Ryan Dolby’s low cross and Leon McKenzie headed in from 6 yards. Within 5 minutes however Blues had equalised. Duane Jackman won the ball from Neil Sharp on the right wing and pulled the ball back for Reece Prestedge who shot low into the net from 10 yards.

The excitement continued as in the 15th minute Ben Bowditch missed a half chance from the edge of the box, although this did lead to successive corners for Blues. Then in the 19th minute from a Michael Bakare free kick Sanchez Ming almost scored at the back post forcing a good save from Craig Holloway.

At the other end, just after the half hour Danny Hockton went close with a glancing header from a corner, while McKenzie shot over in the 33rd minute. Five minutes later Stefan Gaisie had a shot on the turn which was just over – the chance being created by good approach work from Bakare and Prestedge.

After a very even first half there was a blow for Blues when Bromley regained the lead in the 42nd minute. Dolby took aa free kick and found Tutu Henrique who made no mistake when left unmarked 4 yards out. Still at 2-1 there was all to play for in the second half.

Kitteridge had to make a good save from McKenzie early in the second half but then disaster struck in the 59th minute. Chi Eberendu was sent of for a second yellow card and suddenly Blues were up against it, a goal and a man down with half an hour to play. To their credit though they reacted positively however and in the 68th minute Ming scored a second equaliser for Blues from 15 yards.

Inevitably however Bromley were able to make their numerical advantage count and only 5 minutes later they had the lead again. A brilliantly weighted ball from Wes Daly found that man McKenzie again, who rounded Kitteridge to score Bromley’s third goal.

It seemed all over 10 minutes later when McKenzie lobbed Kitteridge for his hat trick to seemingly wrap up the points for Bromley. However Blues fought to the end and in the 6th minute of injury time gained a reward. The ball fell loose from a Paolo Vernazza throw and Ben Bowditch seized the loose ball 10 yards out to score Stortford’s third goal. It was all too little too late however as the hosts held on to win an entertaining game by the odd goal in seven.

Also on this day in 1998 today was our first game after moving out of Rhodes Avenue. At Clarence Park, St Albans we hosted Sutton United in a league game which we lost 1-0. St Albans was only one of many grounds used in the next 18 months before the current ground was ready at the start of the 1999-00 season.
