Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 26th

The recent fate of teams who have played us on Boxing Day in the last 10 years, apart from taking three points has been to get promoted. This has happened to St Albans after we played them in 2005, Braintree Town after games in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and recently Boreham Wood who we played in 2014.

This was always going to be a tough game with Boreham Wood the league leaders and Blues close to the relegation zone, but we put in a good performance and should have got something out of the game. The first half was a fairly even affair, with both sides creating opportunities. Joe Wright, back in goal for the first time in three months for Blues made a quite superb stop after just four minutes. Matty Whichelow’s curling free kick from the left was met by Angol whose powerful header was prevented from hitting the top left hand corner of the net by a flying save.

Sheldon Sellears, the stand out player in the first half caused problems for the home defence, forcing a save from James Russell before flashing a dangerous ball across the box.

Some good possession play from Whichelow led to a corner from he delivered a fine cross onto the head of Ben Martin whose downward header was cleared off the line by a defender. Blues were so close to taking the lead when Frankie Merrifield struck the woodwork, before the dangerous Whichelow cut inside from the right to hit a rising drive at the other end which sailed just wide of the target. Anthony Church then shot just wide at one end, before Graeme Montgomery fired over at the other in an end to end first half.

Boreham Wood upped the tempo after the interval and Callum Reynolds stole in at the far post to force Wright to save low from a Whichelow free kick. Walker then went close for the visitors with an effort across the face of the goal, before Angol struck in the 55th minute. Morias provided tha high cross field delivery from the right which was met by Montgomery whose dangerous cross was expertly fired home beyond Wright by the in form striker.

Russell then made two saves in quick succession to deny Ashley Miller and then Sellears before the welcome introduction of one Anthony Jeffrey after signing for the home side two days earlier.

Winning the ball in midfield he chipped over an opponent to set up a superb move involving Angol, Whichelow and Ricky Shakes before hitting a low drive to win a corner. The game was won after 81 minutes when Angol played out as far as Shakes who supplied Montgomery out on the left. He advanced play before delivering a fine cross that found Angol who put a fine header beyond Wright for his eighteenth League goal of the season.

Our most recent Boxing Day win was in 2001 against Harlow Town in front of one of the largest crowds for a league game here (717). Blues came into the game with no wins in 4 games while Harlow had 5 wins out of 6. A large holiday crowd got behind Stortford and they thoroughly beat the odds winning 4-1 in an exciting game which was closer than the scoreline suggests.

Freddie Hyatt who made his debut in that game isn’t the only Blues player to make his debut on Boxing Day. The most celebrated was probably Will Cooper who made his debut on Boxing Day 1994 and went on to make nearly 200 appearances and score over 50 goals. Another who stands out for older supporters was Don Yell a consistent defender who first played for Stortford on Boxing Day 1961 and starred in the run to the FA Amateur Cup Quarter Final in 1963 that first put BSFC on the map in amateur football.
