Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 27th

The majority of games on this date occurred when it fell on a Saturday but in 2006 our Boxing Day visit to Thurrock was scheduled for a Wednesday evening. We were in 2nd place in the table at the time but playing our first league game in two weeks and looking to make up ground on leaders Histon.

Ashley Fuller made way for Sam Taylor on the right of midfield while Michael Stanbrook’s flu meant an automatic return for Rob Gilman following the injury that kept him out of the defeat of St Albans City.

Blues arrived at The Hotel without a win over their rivals since 1997, spanning some 12 games. Thurrock had strung together 6 home games in the league without defeat and had scored in 13 consecutive matches. Despite starting the game in 17th position, the omens were not with the Blues.

However some prolific finishing from Essandoh and an out of sorts performance from the home side gave Blues possibly their most comfortable win of the season. In front of goal, Thurrock were, at their worst, comical. Gone are the days of tormentors such as Georgiou, Cobb, Kandol and Akurang. Instead, Leon McKenzie set the blueprint for the evening with a poor effort on 6 minutes from inside the box that flew dismally over Andy Young’s crossbar.

It was a fairly even first half hour, although Blues looked the liveliest. Main threat was Dave Collis from any set piece. Following a flurry of corners for Stortford, Roy Essandoh finally met one with absolute precision to head the ball like a bullet into the empty Thurrock net. With 4 minutes of the first half remaining, the tall striker again headed into the goal, this time Danny Morgan, who enjoyed an excellent game, was the provider.

Blues put the result beyond any doubt when Jack Midson danced his way through the Thurrock half. Once in the penalty box, he slid a perfectly-weighted ball for the oncoming Essandoh to blast past the hapless Max Aneke in goal and bag his hat-trick and Stortford’s third.

Essandoh was in unstoppable form and could have claimed two more. On 75 minutes he was denied by Aneke’s outstretched leg from an acute angle and before the end he was denied by the linesman’s flag having shot into the goal from close range. In between, Danny Morgan came close to claiming the goal that his endeavour deserved. Meanwhile, at the other end, Andy Young was woken from his slumber to make a tremendous double save that would have flattered Thurrock had a goal been scored.
