Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 29th
For this day I make no apology for focusing on one particular game. In 1956 on this date we played Dagenham at Victoria Road. A close game wasn’t expected, Dagenham were top of the league and Stortford were only one place off the bottom. As you can see from the timeline below though the punters got their money worth.(Dagenham are the home team so their score is shown first. ie 2-5 = Dagenham 2 Stortford 5.
7 minutes – Greenhill opened the scoring for Dagenham hitting a Bridge pass into the net.
10 minutes – Yates replies for Stortford with a shot that gave Skinner no chance. 1-1
38 minutes – Horton drew Skinner before presenting Francis with the simplest of chances to put Stortford ahead – 1-2.
49 minutes – Another Yates goal. He lobbed the ball over a wall of players to give Skinner no chance – 1-3.
60 minutes – Bridge reduced the arrears from the spot after being pulled down just inside the area – 2-3.
71 minutes – Seizing on a defensive lapse Stortford right winger Adamson steps up to push home a Francis cross – 2-4.
73 minutes – Dagenham’s hopes of preserving their home record fade as Horton collected a pass from Hussey, rounds Skinner and rammed the ball into the net – 2-5.
75 minutes – Opportunist Greenhill fastens on to a loose ball to hit the team’s 3rd goal and revive their flagging spirits – 3-5.
79 minutes – Warrior fails to tackle Adamson whose cross is headed in by Francis to restore the Stortford lead – 3-6.
81 minutes – A charging duel between Greenhill and Stortford goalkeeper Kearsley resulted in a hotly disputed penalty award and Bridge scored his second from the spot – 4-6.
83 minutes – Kearsley clears his lines but Brooks promptly banged the ball back into the Stortford goalmouth and Greenhill slammed in the 5th Dagenham goal as the goalkeeper raced back to his post – 5-6.
89 minutes – The injured Cresswell, dazed from a blow on the head, takes a corner on the right. Constable heads the ball goalwards and Bridge is there to notch the equaliser – 6-6!
7 goals in the last 19 minutes. I bet not many of the 1000 crowd left early.
Meanwhile in 2007 we had a solo virtuoso performance as Blues beat Cambridge City 4-0 in a holiday season M11 derby with 4 goals from Greg Pearson.
