Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 30th
In 1999 we played Chertsey Town away in an Isthmian League game billed as the last game of the century. Pedants will argue that it was actually the last game of the 90s and clever marketing included a raffle with a prize of a season ticket for life.
The game needed marketing as it was played on a Thursday night between the teams lying 20th and 22nd in the league. Stortford started stronger with Troy Braham’s free kick hitting the post as early as the 4th minute. However, just a minute later Chertsey’s first move into Stortford’s half resulted in a goal, a quick break and Warren Bayliss headed home.
Stortford struck back immediately though. Within two minutes Matt Waldron’s corner was flicked on by Martin Hayes and Danny Foot poked the ball in at close range at the far post. On the quarter hour mark though Blues managed to let Chretsey take the lead again. Richard Day fumbled a corner and Fishton Mputu headed home.
After that Martin Hayes had a header cleared off the line but Chertsey gained confidence and were in control for the rest of the first half, fully deserving their 2-1 lead at half time.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half Blues were level again as Vinnie John scored from Trevor Paul’s cross. On the hour mark Stortford took the lead when another Paul cross reached Matt Waldron who scored from a tight angle.
At this point the game began to descend into farce as Chertsey had Rob Peters sent off for a punch, Nicky Hunt for a second bookable offence and Ryan Ashe for reasons that were unclear. Just to even things up a bit Troy Braham was also sent off – 4 players in 15 minutes along with a member of the Chertsey bench.
With a two man advantage Blues managed to stretch their advantage to 5-2 as Waldron scored his second following a scramble in the penalty area and then Trevor Paul added his name to the scorers list with our fifth. Chertsey managed to score a consolation at the death when Rob French shot past Day in the 90th minute. Even then there was time for Vinnie John to miss three chances in injury time before the referee brought an eventful game to a conclusion.
