Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 17th

The game on this date in 2011 was the first game in charge for Rod Stringer. The club had moved quickly to replace Ian Walker with a manager with a proven record of success at our level. Rod took over with the team in the Conference North relegation zone and a pre-Christmas trip to Gloucester who were mid-table, while not the toughest start possible was seen as a difficult game in light of our current form.

Ironically our last league win had been over two months earlier when we beat Gloucester City 3-2 at home. The formation was to have Dwight Gayle playing up front on his own but this worked well and the team played well at Cheltenham, Gloucester’s temporary home. From the start Blues were working hard, closing down Gloucester and unsettling them. The first chance came in the 13th minute when a long ball from Phil Anderson found Gayle, who cut in but had his shot blocked. Almost immediately afterwards Gloucester showed they could be a threat when Rose headed over from Reece’s corner. Mid-way through the half Scott Shulton took a loveely corner for Blues which was just missed by the heads of Anderson and Francis. It was an even game as the Tigers responded with a shot from Morford which was held by Archer and then a throw from Gayle found its way to Abdullahi who hit a 20 yard shot which was held by Carey above his head. Archer then had to cut out a dangerous cross before Reece Prestedge was foiled by a quick thinking Carey at the end of a dangerous attack. In the 35th minute Blues took the lead as Prestedge found Gayle on the edge of the box. The Storford striker’s speed got him to the ball before Carey and he managed to slide the ball inside the post from a sharp angle. Only a minute later Davies had a shot deflected wide for Gloucester before Stortford spurned two chances to increase their lead through Dadson and Gayle, but a 1-0 lead at half time was still a satisfactory position for Blues.

Stortford started the second half as they ended the first and doubled their lead on 50 minutes as Prestedge found Dadson from his own half. The winger ran through the defence before scoring a well deserved goal to make it 2-0. Following this Blues were happy to sit on their lead as Gloucester posed no real threat, indeed Dadson could have made it three only to be defeated by an awkward bounce. Davies made Archer work with a shot from outside the area on 75 minutes but Shulton and Gayle both had chances for Blues in the 81st and 86th minutes respectively. At the death Gloucester belatedly put on some pressure and won several free kicks and corners but these were all dealt with calmly by the Stortford defence who tried to keep possession and play their way out of defence. In the end it was a well deserved win for Blues and a great start for Mr Stringer, which moved us up one crucial place – out of the relegation zone.
