Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 19th

On this date in 1987 we played our other FA Trophy game against Sutton United. We beat them in the 1981 final at Wembley of course, but six years later we were drawn away to Sutton in the FA Trophy first round. Once again they were a division above us having been promoted to what was then the GM Vauxhall Conference.

Blues tested home goalkeeper Trevor Roffey early on while Micky Cornwell showed why manager John Radford had deemed him a danger by testing the defensive skills of Martin Taylor and Colin Hull.

Stortford won several corners in the first half before Paul McKinnon headed down for Cornwell to beat Taylor after 30 minutes but fortunately he was well offisde.

Three minutes before the interval Blues had their best chance of the half when Devon Gayle earned a corner. Francis Cassidy took the corner and Hull headed inches wide.

Cassidy was in action again in the very first minute of the second half passing three defenders before forcing a good save out of Roffey. Blues took a deserved lead in the 53rd minute when a long ball from defence found Andy Weddell on the left. His square pass was drilled home by Jeff Wood from 14 yards.

Four mintues later after a “robust” challenge from Gayle, Roffey had to stretch to prevent Sutton defender Stuart Hemsley heading Tony Sorrell’s long throw into his own net. Sorrell did well to tackle Cornwell, ending a dangerous Sutton move before Wood volleyed a loose ball into the Sutton net in the 67th minute to put Blues 2-0 up.

Sutton weren’t giving up yet, in the 70th minute it took a good tackle from Martin McCayna to stop Cornwell and 5 minutes later Taylor had to make a good save from Francis Awaritefe. However Stortford could have wrapped it up in the 81st minute when first Zacchau and then Wood forced two excellent saves from Roffey. Action at both ends in the 89th minute when Les Dennis missed with a header from 8 yards and then Wood was denied a hat trick by Roffey.

A good performance by Blues saw them deservedly through to the 2nd Round against their higher status opponents in a time when the FA Trophy was still taken very seriously.
