Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 5th

The most recent game on this date was in 2015 when we lost 2-1 at home to Basingstoke Town. This followed another defeat in 2009 when we played a very forgettable Conference South game against Woking here. The Surrey side were fitter and stronger and won easily 3-0. They led 1-0 at half time and added two more in the second half – goals by Ademola, Sole and Wright.

The biggest post-war win for Blues on this date was at home to Uxbridge in the 92-93 season. At the time Stortford were in 7th place trying to get in touch with the promotion places following relegation the previous season while Uxbridge were just below mid-table, making this the sort of game we had to win. Blues had lost their last game against league leaders Hitchin so were keen to get back to winning ways.

Needing a good start, that was exactly what Stortford got when they took the lead after three  minutes. Andy Walker sent in a corner from the right and Lee Claridge was first to a loose ball to score the goal. Blues proceeded to dominate the first half and Harrigan, Dance and Das all had chances to increase the lead which were not taken, leaving the score still at 1-0 at half time. As so often happens within a few minutes of the restart Nicky Ryder shot past Gavin King to give Uxbridge an equaliser.

Blues looked a bit shaky for a while but on the hour Lee Burns was injured and replaced by Stewart Ingielewicz making his debut. The new boy began to cause problems for Uxbridge with his pace and he made a chance for Das who shot over the bar. Soon after Petrou beat two defenders before shooting. Dawson in the Uxbridge goal could not hold it and Das scored from the rebound. In the lead again Stortford were on top now and Ingielewicz (twice), Das, Petrou (twice) and Dance all had chances to increase the lead. Five minutes remained when Dance finally made the points safe with a great chip over the keeper. Almost immediately from the restart Dance was there at the far post to score the 4th goal from Walker’s shot. The scoreline was no more than Stortford deserved but they did make the fans suffer for it.
