Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on December 3rd

A fine own goal and a strike from Bentley gave Blues a rare win last season as we returned from the long trip to Truro City with a 2-1 win.

In 2011 we had the amazing sight of a team coming from north of Newcastle to play a league game. Blyth Spartans, who we had met in our FA Amateur Cup winning season came here for a Conference North game. Both sides were in the bottom 3 of the table and the standard of football was not great but there was plenty of entertainment. The only goal in the first half came from Reece Prestedge who gave Blues a 1-0 half-time lead in the 44th minute. The second half saw Blues go 2-0 up in the 54th minute through David Adepipe before Hooks pulled one back for Blyth on the hour. Ten minutes later Taylor got an equaliser for the visitors. Things went from bad to worse as Mason gave Blyth the lead in the 78th minute but Blues fought back and Prestedge grabbed an equaliser in the second minute of injury time.

Further back in 1994 we played Wokingham Town at Rhodes Avenue in our first season back in the Isthmian Premier Division following promotion. Wokingham were on the slide into their present obscurity having finished 16th and 19th in the previous two seasons. In the current season they were bottom of the table with only 4 points from 15 games. However Blues were none too comfortable in 17th place and the points had to be won.

Leo Fortune-West was in great form with 19 goals in the previous 25 games and well supported by Lee Burns and Neil le Bihan he made it a miserable afternoon for Wokingham. In the first 10 minutes the visitors seemed to neutralise the threat with an off side trap. Nevertheless Blues were controlling the game and eventually scored the opening goal mid way through the first half. Tony Comerford got away from his marker and his cross was powerfully headed in by Fortune-West. Only 6 minutes elapsed before the lead was doubled as Jackman found Fortune-West with a ball from defence. Some nice interplay between the striker and Le Bihan resulted in a volley from the edge of the box into the top corner by Fortune-West. Just before half time the result of the match was virtually sealed by an incident. Simon Line was sent off for handball in the penalty area and Blues were given a penalty. Andy Edmonds made no mistake and Stortford should have gone in at half time 3-0 up against 10 men. However they relaxed and Richard Newberry lobbed King from 20 yards to remind Stortford the game was not yet won.

John Radford must have had a few words at half time as Blues punished Wokingham again almost from the off in the second half. Lee Burns passed to Le Bihan who in a seemingly unthreatening position hit 30 yard shot that the keeper could not get near to make it 4-1. For the rest of the game it was not a question of who would win but how many goals Blues would score. Edmonds headed wide from a Comerford cross and shortly after Comerford hit the post himself. Fortune-West then shot wide looking for his hat trick and Parratt also was wide after doing the hard work and beating three challenges. With 10 minutes to go Munn’s header was pushed away by the keeper straight to Fortune-West who lapped up the opportunity to make it 5-1. An easy win against weak opponents but wouldn’t we like to see Blues dominate a game like that again.
