Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues games on November 14th
November 14th has generally been a successful date for BSFC, but the game in 2009 ended a good run. We played a league game against Weymouth who were bottom of the league, six points adrift and beaten by us 6-2 the previous August. Unfortunately things didn’t go to plan.
Firstly it was a minor miracle that the game could be played at all as the pitch was drenched by
persistent rain, while a swirling wind made playing football a dark art for both sets of players.
Matt Jones made a welcome reappearance as Ben Nunn was sidelined with a hamstring problem. New signing Alli Abdullahi joined Roy Essandoh and three of the youth graduates on the bench.
Stortford went into the game as clear and obvious favourites. And for the opening fifteen minutes Blues predictably forced the pace – a pattern that remained consistent through the game. Glen Southam’s wind-assisted cross from out wide was pushed onto Ryan Harrison’s crossbar. Harrison looked a little at sea throughout the game, spilling the ball on three occasions, but was
fortunate enough each time to recover the ball at the second attempt. However it was against the run of play when Jake Reid tapped in Josh Llewellyn’s cross on 17 minutes to give the visitors the lead.
Just before half time Harrison lost control of Scott Shulton’s excellent long range effort, but with Southam looking to get the second ball, Harrison reacted quickly and pulled the ball to safety.
Weymouth were restricted to few chances in the first half, but Jordan Rose’s rasping shot was cleanly held by Nicky Eyre in between stortford’s constant pressure. Hallf time saw Weymouth leading 1-0, against the odds.
In the second half, the pitch soaked up the driving rain as Weymouth continued to soak up the Blues pressure. With just a minute gone, Ashley Nicholls should have done better than head wide from Southam’s umpteenth corner. The same could be said for Lewis Smith who couldn’t get enough purchase on his shot to test Harrison just past the hour.
Stortford’s best two chances came in the dying minutes of a frustrating afternoon. First Lewis Smith sliced the ball wide from in front of goal before making way for Abdullahi and in the last minute Essandoh headed Sulaiman’s cross wide of the goal.
As mentined above on bright spot was that this was Ali Abdullahi’s debut, a player who has become popular with the fans and has now made over 100 appearances for Blues in two spells with the club.
