Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues games on November 12th

We haven’t played a home game on this date since 1994 – the most recent away game was a trip to Oxford City in 2016.

It was a disappointing performance against our former Conference North rivals as City’s debutant keeper Ty Belford ended the game without getting muddy despite Femi Akinwande’s 93rd minute consolation.

The only change to Blues’ starting 11 saw Harry Hickford return to the team in place of the injured Jamie Slabber while Jon Nouble was named as a substitute after recovering from injury..

City started strongly and took a 24th minute lead Reece Fleet and Jonny Giles combined to allow the former to give City the lead. Three minutes later and the lead was doubled as Jefferson Louis hammered a shot beyond Tom Lovelock.

The second half continued in much the same vein with the home side making the running and creating several good chances before Giles got himself on the list of scorers to kill off the game on 67 minutes.

Akinwande netted his fourth goal in five games since joining on loan from Colchester United when he hit a low drive three minutes into injury time but it was too little, too late for the visitors as they remain bottom of Vanarama South.

In 1991 there was an unusual match when we made the short trip to Stansted for an East Anglian Cup 1st Round match. Stortford dominated the first half and took the lead in the 31st minute when John Lawford side footed home from the edge of the 6 yard box. As often happens they then relaxed and Stansted equalised just before half time when Martin Taylor gave away a penalty in a goalmouth scramble. He then made amends by saving Ian Burr’s penalty but could not stop the same player scoring from the rebound.

Blues dominated the second half as well but despite multiple chances from Nicky White, Chris Piper, Pedro Petrou and Lawford they were unable to prevent the match going to extra time. Finally on 112 minutes Ian Brownjohn chested down a corner before scoring from 14 yards. Four minutes later Petrou sealed the victory with a penalty.
