Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues games on November 8th

This date has been very eventful in our history, although the last three games have been Herts Senior Cup games won at home to Colney Heath in 2016 and Watford in 2011 and away to Berkhamsted  in 2005.

Prior to that in 2003 we played the biggest game on this date when we faced Mansfield Town in the FA Cup first round. This was the first time we had reached this stage for almost 20 years and there were hopes of a giant killing. Unfortunately Blues did not do themselves justice, looking nervous from the start and going a goal down after 13 minutes. Three minutes later it was 2-0 and by half-time we were four goals down. On the hour mark a hard task turned hopeless as Gwillim conceded a penalty and was sent off. The bright spot was that Desborough redeemed an earlier error by saving the penalty but Blues struggled with 10 men and eventually lost 6-0, a harsh scoreline but a fair result.

Two FA Trophy games on this date, in 1997 a good win away to then Southern League Crawley Town in their new Broadfield Stadium and in 1980 a win away to Kingstonian in the 2nd Qualifying Round. Six months later we were lifting the Trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Perhaps the outstanding result was in 1972 when we played Dagenham in the FA Cup 4th Round Qualifying. We were strong rivals in those days, especially as we had poached the Daggers manager Ted Hardy and several players. The first match had seen a draw at Rhodes Avenue and a close game was expected at Victoria Road in the replay. Dagenham started well on top in front of a 1700 crowd and came at Stortford from the off. However on the quarter hour against the run of play Blues took the lead through John Dear. On the half hour Dear doubled the lead with a shot from 20 yards and now Blues had the upper hand. Merrifield scored from even further out on the stroke of half time to give Stortford a 3-0 lead and Francis finished the scoring in the 62nd minute as Blues gained a 4-0 win, one of their best against Dagenham and the right to visit Enfield in the 1st Round.

We also played two wartime friendlies on this date, as the club struggled to keep going dueing World War 2, facing an RAF XI in 1939 when the war was just a few weeks old and an Army XI in 1941 shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbour
