Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games onNovember 6th

In 2012 we had a Herts Senior Cup game away to newly formed Berkhamsted – not the same club as Berkhamsted Town who we played many times in the past.

Goals from Jesse Waller-Lassen, Blair Sturrock (2) and Steve Cawley gave us a 4-1 win that was somewhat flattering in what proved to be Ian Walker’s penultimate game in charge.

The most recent league game was at Dorchester in Conference South in 2010. The Blues gave a stubborn, rearguard display at the Avenue Stadium which resulted in a first League draw of the campaign together with the first “clean sheet” of the term. The Magpies were on a three match winning run before the game but Stortford’s all-round battling performance thwarted the hosts. Ross Kitteridge, in particular, was outstanding between the posts making several excellent saves to deny Dorchester as they piled on the pressure in the closing stages. Other fine performances came from Connor Essam and Lynvall Duncan in the centre of the defence, Matt Jones and Ben Bowditch in midfield and Leon Antoine, who worked very hard up front. However, all played their part in bringing home the point.

The first half was generally a dour affair with few incidents. Stortford were facing a low sun before the break, and with the pitch a little bobbly, found passing not easy with moves breaking down when a pass went astray. An early free-kick from Jamie Gleeson struck the Blues’ defensive wall and deflected to Nick Crittenden whose shot was turned away for a corner by Kitteridge.

Stortford’s first attempt at goal came in the 13th minute when Aiden Palmer tried a speculative shot from 25 yards that was a foot over the bar. Back at the other end, in the 16th minute, Crittenden’s corner was headed wide at the back post by Gary Bowles. Reece Prestedge and Ben Bowditch put together a promising move on the left in the 22nd minute before the latter’s cross was deflected in the direction of Antoine coming in at the far post but the striker was unable to get his boot on the ball.

Midway in the half, a glancing header from the Magpies’ striking menace Danny Ings from a Kyle Critchell cross went wide before the Blues won their first corner in the 24th minute but Reece Prestedge’s flag kick came to nothing.

On the half hour Bowles’ free-kick was nodded goalwards by Gleeson and Kitteridge blocked away Rico Wilson’s angled effort at the near post for a corner. Then, a concerted Magpies attack in the 35th minute ended with a shot from the edge of the penalty box from skipper Mark Jermyn that was deflected away from goal. From the resultant corner, Kitteridge pushed out a weak header from Wilson.

One thing evident before the break was the increasing distance that Paolo Vernazza was getting on his throws and from a similar long throw into the box four minutes after the interval Stortford came their closest to scoring. The throw was deflected out to the edge of the box where Ben Bowditch connected with a side-foot volley that hit the top of the bar before going out for a goal-kick.

Gradually, though, the hosts were building up their momentum and in the 57th minute Ings showed fine skills to cut in along the byeline to shoot narrowly wide and striker was again in the picture in the 71st minute after Critchell and Jermyn linked on the right to provide him with the ball. Ings cut inside and fired in an angled shot that Kitteridge turned away at full stretch. The Stortford keeper was in action again three minutes later when his defence failed to clear an attack and Crittenden’s 23 yard low effort was well saved – diving full length to his right.

In the 77th minute Crittenden tried again from distance and the ball just cleared the bar. Connor Essam collected the only booking of the match from Referee Adam Bromley shortly afterwards in the 79th minute when he handled the ball just inside his own half and was shown a yellow card for unsporting behaviour. Following the resultant free-kick Crittenden eventually crossed from the right and Ings’ close range back post header was brilliantly pushed away by Kitteridge at the angle of the upright and bar for a corner. This was the best of the Blues’ keeper’s saves.

At this stage the Magpies were throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Stortford goal. In fact, in the last twenty minutes or so of the game the Blues hardly managed to get inside the Dorchester half. Three minutes from the end of normal time Dorchester players thought they had scored following a free-kick out towards the left touchline, and near the corner flag, after Lynvall Duncan had fouled Ings. Crittenden’s low free-kick into the six yard box resulted in an almighty scrimmage close to the Blues’ goal-line and after Kitteridge dropped on to the ball Kyle Critchell claimed that he had poked the ball over the line. However, after restoring order, Referee Bromley

ruled that Dorchester’s Gary Bowles had committed a foul and awarded a free-kick to Stortford.

Right on the 90 minutes Jake Smeeton’s corner was deflected across the face of Kitteridge’s goal and from the succeeding flag kick the Stortford keeper safely held on to the ball at his near post. Referee Bromley added four minutes stoppage time which the Blues negated to take home a hard earned point.
