Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on November 5th

The last game played on this date was a 2-1 win at home to Weston-super Mare in Conference South in 2016, Michael Richens and Akinwande getting the goals.

However going back a little further to 2005 there was a bizarre incident filled match in which Blues lost 3-0 at home to Lewes despite the visitors only having one shot on target from open play in the whole match.

Stortford had made an average start to the season being in 14th place at the start of the game while Lewes despite being on the fringe of the play offs in 7th place were only 4 points ahead. It may have been an omen when we found that the match referee had been involved in an accident and we had a substitute referee.

Blues started the game and had narrowly the better of an even first half. Early on Dave Rainford had a header at the near post which Paul Wilkerson could keep out but was unable to hold on to. Fortunately the rebound did not go to a Stortford player. Soon after Jack Midson found space after a defensive error and set up Steve Morison who shot just past the post on his left foot. Louie Evans also had a chance from a Morison cross but hit the ball straight at Wilkerson. Lewes had chances but Amos Foyewa and Kirk Watts were both off trget. The best chance came when Watts mishit a cross forcing Danny Gay to stretch to turn the ball over. No great surprise that the score was 0-0 at half time and it didn’t look like being a high scoring game.

Early in the second half Lewes scored a freak goal to take the lead. Pass from the right was about to be gathered by Gay with no danger when Ben Lewis, attempting to intercept only succeeded in turning it past his on keeper. Stortford fought back and were still in the game when with 15 minutes to go Lewes were awarded a penalty when Lewis apparently stamped on Foyewa in the penalty area. Lewis was sent off and Jean-Michel Sigere, with their first on-target shot of the game put the visitors 2-0 up. Going from bad to worse 10 man Blues then lost Gay with an injury replaced by James Hussey. Still the team fought hard with Duane Jackman prominent with his never say die attitude but time was slipping away. In injury time the inevitable happened as a tired stretched Blues defence let Brennan pass to Sigere who with only Hussey to beat put his team 3-0 with their first shot on target in open play of the match.

One thing notable about this game was the debut of Jason Mason who went on to play 132 games for Stortford. Another debut on this day in 1988 was Billy Harrigan who played the first of his 299 games at home to Croydon in an Isthmian League game.
