Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on September 13th

A recent game on this date was in 2008 when we faced Newport County in a Conference South game here. We had started the season slightly the better being placed 12th before the game while Newport were 17th, although they had a game in hand. Both teams records were evenly matched as was the game.

It was certainly an eventful game as Blues fielded 3 goalkeepers during the game. No hint of the drama to come though as Peter Dean wasted at least 3 good chances in the first half. The first came when he was through with only the keeper to beat but could only shoot straight at Anthony Tucker, who saved with ease. Roy Essandoh also had a chance forcing a good save from Tucker. On the whole it was a good first half from the home side and they got the goal they deserved in the 39th minute. Dee Okojie pushed forward on the right and hit a good shot from 15 yards which beat Tucker and hit the bar. Essandoh was on hand and alert enough to head the rebound into an empty net to give Blues a 1-0 half-time lead.

Unfortunately Nicky Eyre had to go off at half-time with an ankle injury and Charlie Hasler took over. However he was only on the field for 10 minutes when he was judged to have fouled Newport striker Paul Hall and was sent off. Peter Dean went in goal to face the penalty which was scored for Newport’s equaliser by Rob Duffy. From this point on though Dean was a hero, while the defence tried to protect him he still made a a couple of decent saves, although on one occasion Paul Goodacre had to clear the ball off the line from Walsh. Just past the hour mark a shot from 25 yards by Danny Harris was tipped over by Tucker, as Blues tried to regain the lead with 10 men. On 83 minutes Newport did get the ball over the line but the referee spotted an infringement in the melee preceding this and gave Blues a free kick. It only remained for Richard Howell to be prevented from scoring by an offside decision and in the end it was an honourable draw for Bishop’s Stortford in the circumstances.

This did however extend our sequence of not winning on this date, the last win is now 26 years ago when we beat Windsor & Eton 4-2 at home in an Isthmian League Cup 1st Round game.

A notable debut on this date was Terry Sullivan who played his first game in an FA Cup defeat at Bedford Town in 1980. Scorer of the winning goal in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley, Terry went on to play 165 games and score 43 goals, not a bad return for a winger.
