Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on February 14

There have been no significant matches on this date for some time, something to do with Valentines Day which means midweek games tend not to be scheduled for that day now. Our two most recent games on this date have been 1-1 draws.

In 2009 in the middle of a cold snap after a fine effort by the Stortford fans who spent most of Friday clearing snow from the pitch to ensure that the home gaainst St Albans was on. Stortford forced pressure early with Danny Green coming closest making Bastock dive to his left to make sure it was covered. Whilst St Albans also had their chances with quick breaks down the wing it was Stortford who saw most of the inventive play with Danny Harris working hard and distributing the ball in to all the right places. Eventually the hard effort payed off and Lewis Smith dinked in and out of the St Albans defence to shoot past Bastock.. The remainder of the half saw yet more Stortford dominance with goal mouth pressure piled on from corners and free kicks. At half time we held on to that precious 1-0 lead.

St Albans started the second half in a more lively manner but Stortford still pushed up at every opportunity. Lewis Smith made another good break but was rugby tackled by Everitt just outisde the box but this apparently only deserved a yellow card. From the resulting clearance the Stortford back four were left floundering and Eyre came out allowing Hakim to equalise. Sadly the game flattened out over the last 25 minutes with an even display from both teams.

Essandoh had a good chance with a right footed shot late on in the game but Bastock had it covered. An injury time free kick for Stortford sadly didn’t result in a well deserved winner.

Five years earlier we travelled to Chestnut Avenue to take on Northwood in a significant Isthmian League game. With two thirds of the season gone Blues were well placed – 10th – to take up a place in the new Conference South while Northwood were struggling to make up ground. The game started off at a fast pace with Grant Cooper hitting the bar with a free kick after 3 minutes before Heselton put Northwood into the lead on just 5 minutes. Micky Desborough in the Blues goal was kept busy as Northwood pressed their advantage with Elsegood, Heselton again and Knight all having chances. Shortly before half time though Blues turned the match around with two goals. First Alex Martin scored from a free kick and then 3 minutes later he set up Bunn to put Blues into the lead. At half time Stortford had a surprising lead but on the hour Heselton got his second to equalise again. A few minutes later Southam was sent off for a suspected head butt and things looked bad for Stortford. Northwood again pressed home their advantage and Desborough had to make several more saves but Blues held out and on 90 minutes they grabbed a 90th minute winner from Aaron Barnett. The win may not have been decisive at that time of the season but it certainly helped as Stortford qualified for the Conference South and Northwood missed out.
