Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues games on February 13

Nine years ago today Blues played a thrilling top-of-the-table match with Salisbury City. The previous Saturday we had won at Welling United, thanks to Ashley Fuller’s corner-cum-shot and gone top of the league, while Salisbury were in second place to set the scene up perfectly. A large mid-week gate of 651 created a great atmosphere and were not disappointed with the game, although the result itself was not all they had hoped for.

The rain that fell throughout the match did nothing to dampen enthusiasm or spoil the quality of the football. Early on Ryan Lockett had a shot deflected and then Tim Langer headed in a cross from Gareth Gwillim only to have it disallowed. This didn’t discourage Blues though as Lockett had another shot blocked while from a corner Gwillim had a chance but slipped on the greasy surface. At the other end Matt Robinson hit a great shot which Chris Wright could only push away for a corner. Mason then had a shot saved and then from his free kick Gilman also slipped while attempting to shoot. After 36 minutes Sam Taylor took a knock and was replaced by Ashley Fuller. The end to end stuff continued as both sides defied the conditions and went for the important opening goal but despite their best efforts the half ended 0-0.

Anton Innocent came on for John Turner in the second half and after only 4 minutes the two subs combined. Innocent had a shot punched out by the keeper. It went straight to the feet of Fuller 20 yards out who smashed it back past the keeper to give Blues the lead. Stortford dominated the second half for a while with Lockett shooting wide. On 70 minutes Langer went off and Edwards came on, a sign perhaps that Stortford wanted to hold what they had got. Salisbury then picked up the pace and Sales, Matthew and Bass all had good shots but Chris Wright was looking solid in the Blue’s goal. Into the last 10 minutes and both teams were tiring due to the pace of the game and the heaviness of the pitch. In the 87th minute Blues nearly wrapped the game up with a lovely cross by Mason put into the side netting by Fuller. Then in the first minute of added time Stanbrook inexplicably handled in the area and the penalty was dispatched by Cook.

The point was enough to keep Stortford top but in the circumstances players and supporters were desperately disappointed.
