A LOOK BACK AT BLUES’ GAMES ON FEBRUARY 4th

BY ANDREW CORNELL

Thirteen years ago on this date we played one time regular rivals Billericay Town in an Isthmian League Cup game. This should have been our second game against our Essex rivals in 3 days but the Saturday league game had been postponed. Blues were having a very difficult season back in the Isthmian Premier Division being placed second from bottom and struggling against relegation but – a familiar story this – were having much more success in cup games.

We started well and could have taken the lead in the fifth minute. Mark Fay, the 17-year-old Billericay keeper seemed nervous and dropped a cross but Trevor Paul was unable to capitalise and put the ball over the bar. We could have regretted that miss when Chris Moore “scored” for the vistors but the referee had spotted a foul on Shaun O’Neill and the “goal” was disallowed. Apart from that scare Stortford had the better of the first half creating plenty of chances but missing the final touch – Troy Braham being the worst culprit.

Braham was the provider though as the second half started, following a good run down the left with a cross that Paul could not quite turn into the goal. On the hour James Parker started a move from the right back position with a ball to Russell Williamson. His cross found Paul who headed past Fay to put Blues 1-0 up. O’Neill then had to make a good save from Richard Graham to preserve the home lead, which was then extended on 70 minutes. Rob French cut in from the left wing and as the Billericay defence retreated hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area which Fay could not reach – 2-0. Following a penalty appeal against Colin Wall Blues finished off their win with a third goal when Williamson seized a poor back pass and unselfishly gave the ball to Paul to wrap up the win. Not the most important win of the season but a good boost to confidence which Blues took into their next league game.
