Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on August 10th

No league games on this date yet, but in 2004 we travelled to Cheshunt for a Herts Charity Cup match against the side we had faced in the previous final.

Former Stortford midfielder Michael Black was in good form and set up the opening goal for Darrell Cox in the 5th minute. Blues equalised when a Shaun Giddon pass found Duane Jackman who slid the ball past the advancing Richard Hayward. Shortly afterwards Stortford had the lead when James Hosier scored at the second attempt from a corner.

On 38 minutes Black was back in the action with a equaliser for Cheshunt from a great lob which had the beating of Andy Young.

Early in the second half Atkinson missed a chance to give Blues the lead again when he headed over the bar. Cheshunt appealed for a penalty when Crace fell over Young but the referee was having none of it. Leon Archer almost wrapped it up for Cheshunt in the 89th minute but Young made a great point blank save.

The pace did not relent in extra time – mainly dominated by the home side but with Young in great form they were unable to score. So to penalties and once again Blues could thank Young who made two great saves in the shootout and Stortford went through to the 2nd Round.
