Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on July 14th
In 2015 on this date we played our earliest ever competitive game in the season when we faced Potters Bar Town in a Herts Charity Cup game.
A mixed team of triallists and squad players saw the Blues through to the Charity Cup semi-final in the first defence of the trophy that they won against Royston Town last season. They won through courtesy of two goals in the first fifteen minutes.
In the 10th minute John Oyenuga played the ball through for Joe Benjamin to run at goal but the number nine was fouled by the Scholars’ stopper Mike Underwood and Aaron Wickham slotted home the resultant spot-kick. Five minutes later Russell Short collected the ball 25 yards out and with little backlift found the bottom left hand corner with a fine shot.
The visitors’ Chris Doyle netted in the 21st minute but the goal was overruled for offside. After that play was mostly confined to the midfield although Arron Wickham was close twice and Russell Short had a shot saved by Underwood a few minutes before the break.
The Evo Stik Southern League club who included ex Blue Ben Bowditch, had the slight edge on the restart and Tom Lovelock was forced into a save from Doyle in the 55th minute. However, Bar for their strong workrate rarely troubled the Stortford goal.
Russell Short collected a yellow card from referee Mark Mellor after a foul on Bowditch. Stortford were close to extending their lead in the final minute following a corner but the ball was cleared off the line whilst the industrious Joe Benjamin was unlucky not to have got on the scoresheet.
