Blast from the past

There have been no significant matches on this date for some time. However back in 1987 Blues played Cheltenham Town in the second round of the FA Trophy. Cheltenham were then in the GM Vauxhall Conference (Vanarama National League ) and have since progressed to what I still call Division Three before slipping back into non-league. We had played them the previous year in the third round and lost after a replay, this time we lost 1-0 at the first time of asking.   However the significance of this game was that it was the first one since John Radford had been appointed as full-time manager. Despite the fact that the team was in the top half of the league table it was decided to dispense with the management team of Pat Ferry and Lenny Tomkins and take this important step. It showed ambition and that the club aimed to step up a level but unfortunately it all ended in tears when the money ran out in 1989.   Meanwhile on the football side there have been plenty of goals on this date. Ten years ago Blues won a thrilling 4-3 victory against Welwyn Garden City in the Herts Senior Cup. Just goes to show that there is no relationship between the importance of a match and the entertainment value. A strong Blues team won with two goals from Steve Morison and two from Louie Evans in the last 10 minutes on a night when the lead changed hands several times.   Finally, back in 1931 we played an astonishing Herts Senior Cup game against Hitchin Town. In those days we played at the same level as Hitchin’s reserves – in fact we had beaten them in a league game the week before. Add to this the fact that the Herts Senior Cup was taken very seriously in those days and this was a tall order. In the first half – to quote “honours were fairly even with both goals being visited”. However Stortford got the upper hand through Deemer and Haylock. Hitchin then reduced the deficit before Haylock restored Stortford’s two goal lead. By half time however Hitchin had scored twice more to make it 3-3 and all to play for.   In the second half Hitchin had the upper hand but Freeman was dominant in the Stortford defence and against the run of play Haylock restored Stortford;s lead through a penalty. Millard equalised again for Hitchin and the game went into extra time. With the light failing (no floodlights) and Stortford tiring Hitchin finally made their higher league status pay as they scored 3 times for a rather flattering scoreline.
