Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games in early July

Blues have only played one game on July 10th, going down 1-0 at Brightlingsea Regent three years ago.

There’s also only been one game on July 11th, as Blues were due to play their earliest ever Herts Charity Cup tie the following Tuesday when a friendly was arranged with Grays as a warm up to the first “competitive” game.

Blues let a two goal lead slip as they lost their opening pre-season game. Stortford took control early on and went ahead after eight minutes when Elliott Buchanan set up Billy Lobjoit to net with an angled drive. The lead was doubled when George Allen headed home from Buchanan’s cross in the 26th minute but Kenny Beaney pulled a goal back following a corner six minutes later before Bradley Tomlinson equalised after a move down the middle just before the break.

On the restart play was end to end with both sides creating chances. Athletic’s Nathan Ferguson went close whilst Tom Derry missed a couple of chances for the hosts but Brian Moses side-footed the winner from close range late on.

Similarly we’ve only been in action on July 12 once – a 4-0 win at Burnham Ramblers in 2014, the goalscoring details having been lost in the mists of time.
