Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 26th

In 2013 we played Workington away in a Conference North game in what was probably our longest trip for a midweek game. Travelling this far for a Tuesday night game meant some reshuffling as Johnny Herd, Steve Cawley, Jesse Waller Lassen and De’Reece Vanderhyde were all unavailable whilst Alli Abdullahi was unwell. Rod Stringer’s side at Borough Park saw Michael Alaile come into the side following his signing and Danny Elmes also made his debut after coming on as a substitute for Ricky Sappleton with twelve minutes left.

Stortford made a great start by taking the lead in the fourth minute following their first attack. Good work by Brian Woodall on the right touchline sent Sappleton away and his pass inside deflected into the path of Reece Prestedge just outside the area and the skipper advanced to slot his shot wide of keeper Aaran Taylor and it rebounded off the inside of a post to find the net.

The Cumbrians had a lot of the early possession but found little headway through the Stortford defence and early on they were restricted to a rising shot from David Hewson that was over the bar from 25 yards. In fact the Blues could have extended their advantage. The Reds stopper Taylor just managed to grab the ball before Sappleton collected a Callum Webb pass into the box and then in the 14th minute a long throw from Matt Johnson on the right deflected off the
head of a defender to Woodall at the back post but the striker blasted over from close range.

Webb wasn’t far off target with a first time effort past the post from a Harry Baker cross in the 18th minute. At the other end Carl Pentney held on to a low angled shot from striker Jonny Wright and good defensive work from Sean Francis denied Wright as he threatened at the edge of the box shortly afterwards. Baker was very prominent early on with some good runs and crosses. Workington had the greater percentage of possession but created few openings and they were restricted to a long range shot from Arnison that Pentney held easily. However, the Reds equalised with two minutes left of the first half. A move down the middle involving Niall Cowperthwaite and Jacob Hazel provided a break for Arnison to take control of the ball just inside the box and shoot past Pentney from 15 yards.

With time running out before the break Webb was close with a drive over the bar from 25 yards and then in added time Sappleton and Woodall combined to set up Lewis Wilson with a shot from the left edge of the area that keeper Taylor was forced to turn aside.

The Blues made a good start to the second half with Sappleton’s looping header in the first minute following a Lewis Wilson cross from the left setting up Woodall for a chance but an offside flag was raised. Then a spell of pressure from the Blues saw Webb send in Prestedge advancing on goal from the left but keeper Taylor pushed away his shot and when Baker’s follow-up effort was deflected across goal Wilson’s shot was blocked.

Stortford’s momentum culminated with them retaking the lead in the 57th minute. More attacking play on the left flank by Wilson and Prestedge ended with the latter crossing low into the angle of the box where defender Paul Johnson clipped Sappleton to send the striker sprawling. Referee Phil Dermott pointed straight to the spot and Woodall gave Taylor no chance from the penalty kick.
The Blues lead lasted all of 60 seconds however as the Reds were soon back on level terms. The hosts attacked down the right and after Joe Greenhalgh and Jacob Hazel had linked the latter’s cross into the middle was converted by Arnison for his second goal of the night. Five minutes later Adam Bailey-Dennis collected his first booking of the night whilst Wilson was unlucky with a strong drive from outside the area that was just wide of an upright. The half continued at a fast entertaining pace but it was Stortford who came the closest to scoring again. In the 79th minute Prestedge against went on a fine run on the left before crossing into the box where Woodall miskicked in front of goal and when Baker supplied Webb with the loose ball on the far side seconds later the youngster shot wide of the near post.

Disaster struck Stortford with eight minutes remaining as Adam Bailey-Dennis collected his second yellow card of the night after fouling Jonny Wright close to the halfway line. Down to ten men the Blues had a couple of escapes soon afterwards as Jacob Hazel hooked the ball over the bar from close range and then Arnison gently lobbed a cross from Cowperthwaite straight into the arms of Pentney.

The action was coming thick and fast but it was the Blues who had the chances in the later stages of the contest. Woodall, again, miskicked in front of goal – this time after receiving the ball from Wilson. There were four minutes of stoppage time at the end of the match. In the third minute of time added on the Blues were close to scoring as Prestedge and Woodall threatened and the ball broke to Matt Johnson had his shot turned away by Taylor for a corner.

When the flag-kick was taken the ball was held by the Blues close to the touchline but when it found its way back into the middle Webb supplied the pass for Woodall to fire past Taylor from the edge of the box for the winner.
