Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 22nd

Last year we played a Herts Senior Cup Semi-Final against Boreham Wood which was drawn 2-2 and lost on penalties. By coincidence three other games on this date in this century have been 2-2 draws. In 2011 we had Chelmsford City as our visitors. This was a topsy-turvey game where we had the better of the first half only to go in at 0-0. The second half then saw the Essex side 2-0 within 10 minutes before we fought back with an 84th minute goal from Sanchez Ming and a stoppage time equaliser from Solomon Adesioye.

In 2008 we visited Hayes & Yeading United. We had the worst possible start as the home team were awarded a penalty after six minutes when Joe Welch brought down Palmer in the area, escaping a red card because Blues defenders were covering. Saroya made no mistake though in giving his team the lead. Stortford fought back though and had two penalty appeals of their own turned down, on 10 minutes when Greg Pearson seemed to be brought down and later with an appeal for handball against a defender. Pearson, Higgins and Tom Champion all had good chances to equalise but it seemed we would go in at half time 1-0 down when Deen seized a half chance after Higgin’s shot was only parried on 41 minutes. The most dangerous time is the first minute after your team has scored and so it proved when Saroya’s free kick was headed in by Perkins to give the home team a 2-1 half time lead.

The second half started with end to end stuff as Pearson had a shot brilliantly saved before Perkins headed over when he had the chance to make it 3-1. It was Pearson who equalised for the second time with a scrappy goal on 76 minutes after an assist from Higgins. There were no further serious chances for either side and Blues at least stayed in the play off zone in 5th place.

Three years earlier an upcoming FA Trophy Semi-Final may have been on the players’ minds as we managed a disappointing 2-2 home draw with Dorchester Town as we attempted to keep a play off chance alive.

A notable debut on this date was the former Arsenal and Liberia player Christopher Wreh. He came on as a 75th minute sub in a win over Hendon, scored a goal and was never seen again in a Blues shirt.
