Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 15th

For the outstanding game on this date we only have to go back to 2005 years to our FA Trophy quarter -final replay against Gravesend & Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet United).

The previous Saturday Blues had looked to be going out of the Trophy, losing 1-0 to 10-man Gravesend in front of a 1000+ crowd at Woodside Park when Dave Rainford headed a last minute equaliser to a huge cheer of relief. It still looked a tough replay against a side one division above us and Gravesend dominated the first 15 minutes, fortunately without scoring. Just as Blues were fighting their way back into the game they were hit with two hammer blows just before half time. On the 42nd minute Jackson put Gravesend in front and shortly after Alex Martin was sent off for an off the ball incident.

Blues showed some of the fighting spirit that had got them past Canvey Island in the previous round as Dave Rainford scored from a penalty early in the second half to bring the scores level. The rest of the half was filled with some thrilling end to end football until Jackson put Gravesend ahead with his second in the last minute of normal time. However Duane Jackman, who so typified Blues “never say die” attitude in this game equalised again in the 3rd minute of time added on.

Extra time was full of incident to say the least. First Gravesend had Sanders sent off for a second yellow card and then Lovell was given a straight red and suddenly it was Blues who had a one man advantage – 10-9. Dave Rainford then uncharacteristically had a penalty saved but in the 110th minute Steve Morison scored for Blues to send their disbelieving fans into raptures. It was such an amazing game its exciting to watch – even on video when you already know the score!
