Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 12th

In 2016 we had a home draw against Eastbourne Borough and another recent game on this date was a mid-week trip to Harrogate while we were in Conference North from which Blues emerged with a highly creditable 2-2 draw.

Back in 2010 we played away to Newport County in front of a crowd of over 3000. The game was played on a Friday night to avoid a clash with the Rugby on the Saturday and a win would all but seal the championship for the Welsh side.

The kick off was delayed due to the size of the crowd but the few Stortford fans able to make the long journey on a Friday night must have wished it hadn’t started as Morgan scored with a header in the second minute. A few minutes later Nicky Morgan had to be alert to prevent the home side from doubling their lead from a free kick. After that the deluge did not materialise though and Blues (Reds) fought back into the game. Newport still had more of the possession but Stortford looked dangerous, forcing 4 corners. Midway through the first half Scott Shulton saw a shot go just past the post and Leon Antoine finished the half with a header which was just off target. At half time, with the score at 1-0 Blues were very much still in the game.

The pattern for the second half was that Newport got more on top but Stortford worked hard and defended well. On 49 minutes County won their first corner but nothing came of it. Shortly after Erskine headed just wide after getting on the end of Muir’s cross. Back to the other end Duncan headed the ball almost off the goal line and then Morgan made a good save. Henry then went through most of the visitors defence before shooting wide and Morgan saved again from Rose. Both teams brought on substitutes midway through the second half which seemed to break the flow of the game and Stortford were under less sustained pressure for the rest of the game until Rose put the last chance over the bar on 89 minutes. All in all a creditable performance by Stortford after going behind so early but there was only ever one winner.

We have played Croydon twice on this date but the game in 1994 is worthy of note. Croydon were going through a financial crisis but rather than just fold their chairman chose to struggle on using players from the local Thornton Heath League. A string of heavy defeats followed but Croydon made it through the season, reorganised and were promoted back up a few years later. In the meantime Stortford were chasing promotion and needed the points and took the lead on 3 minutes from Trevor Gunn who was unmarked. By the seventh minute it was 3-0 thanks to Comerford and Fortune-West. The half time score was 7-0 and in the second half the pace slowed inevitably but we still ended up with our biggest ever Isthmian League win.
