Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 6th
Our most recent game on this date was a long mid-week trip for a Conference North game against Colwyn Bay on a wild wet and windy night in North Wales. Rod Stringer had to make one change in his starting line-up due to Moses Odubajo being injured and Scott Shulton came back into the side. Stortford fell behind in the 6th minute.
Following the hosts’ first real attack Bay’s Mike Lea’s cross from the left was only half cleared by the Blues’ defence and the ball came out to Gareth Evans whose 20 yard volley fell under the bar and into the net. Two minutes later Jack Lampe crossed invitingly into the six yard box but Ricky Sappleton missed the ball with his attempted side-foot and the ball went out for a goal-kick.
With conditions at the Red Lion Foods Stadium worsening all the time the hosts doubled their lead in the 21st minute. Again Stortford’s defence didn’t deal positively with a cross – this time from the right by Luke Denson – and the ball dropped into the possession of Karl Noon and his shot from 15 yards beat Jordan Archer via a big deflection off of Sean Francis.
Shortly afterwards skipper Reece Prestedge played the ball up to Sappleton and the striker’s shot deflected off a defender into the path of Scott Shulton coming in from the right, however keeper Andy Metcalf came off his line to win the 50/50 ball. The Blues had a fair amount of the possession with the wind in their favour in the first half but the Seagulls closed quickly to deny space around the edge of the box.
On the half-hour Sappleton and Gayle combined to give Matt Johnson an opening and the midfielder’s shot from just outside the area was saved low to his left by keeper Metcalf. Then Johnson’s long crossfield ball to the right flank found Scott Shulton and his angled effort was held by Metcalf. Stortford reduced the arrears in the 39th minute when Sappleton and Gayle linked on the left with Gayle fouled as he cut in towards goal. Reece Prestedge dummied over the free-kick 20 yards out and Dwight Gayle sent the ball wide of Metcalf’s left hand with a slight deflection off the defensive wall.
The hosts almost increased their lead four minutes after the break as player-manager Jon Newby crossed low into the middle and Archer saved well diving to his right to hold on to a shot from Rob Hopley. The third goal wasn’t long in coming though and it arrived in the 55th minute. The Blues’ defence failed to attack a Lea corner on the right and Newby netted from a few yards range at the far post . A few minutes later another corner resulted in Archer saving a drive from John McKenna from the edge of the box. Stortford could have pulled a goal back in the 59th minute following Sebastian Dunbar’s centre from the left but Gayle missed the opportunity by shooting over the bar from 8 yards. The Seagull’s fourth and final goal came in the 70th minute when a long punt upfield by Lea fell deep into Blues’ territory on the left flank and Rob Hopley netted with an angled shot past Archer that went inside the far post.
The hosts were reduced to ten men five minutes later as McKenna was shown a straight red card for a two footed challenge on Reece Prestedge. Soon afterwards the two Stortford substitutes, Jordan Pavett and Ben Seymour-Shove combined when Pavett’s back header found
Seymour-Shove but the Peterborough United youngster’s drive from the left flew past the far post. Pavett found the net in the 88th minute after Lampe had put him clear. However, an offside decision was given against him. In stoppage time Dwight was twice denied shooting opportunities by good blocks by Bay defenders and at the end Dunbar hit the outside of an upright with a cross.
