Andrew Cornell looks at Blues’ games on February 22nd
In 2014 on this date we faced the short journey to Canvey Island to play Concord Rangers in a league game. Both teams were in mid-table but a late run would have put the play-offs within reach so points were still important, but the game proved to be more memorable than expected.
The first couple of half-chances fell to the visitors, who had stuck with their recent switch to a 4-4-2 formation, with Akurang bobbling a weak shot off target before Jake Hall cracked a more powerful effort just past the right post.
The game threatened to change completely on 13 minutes with a moment of madness fromJoe Wright as he sprinted out and flung himself into a late challenge on Cawley. Despite Blues defenders seemingly being alongside to cover and Cawley having been headed more towards the corner than goal, the referee Michael George did not hesitate to brandish the red card.
With no keeper on the bench, due to Sam Cowler’s ankle injury at Bath City, Akurang donned the gloves and immediately spilled the resulting free-kick only to make two close range saves in the ensuing scramble. Inspired by their makeshift keeper, the Blues were ahead just seven minutes later when Francis hooked home a looping shot after a Matt Johnson throw-in was flicked on by Anthony Church to the edge of the box.
Reece Prestedge fired a strike across goal that was well held by Rangers keeper Jamie Butler as the away side decided attack was the best form of defence. The second goal arrived on 24 minutes. A massive kick from Akurang bounced through towards the Rangers backline, and, under pressure from Brian Woodall, Goodacre headed the ball over the oncoming Butler and into the net. Akurang made another low save from Leon Gordon on 29 minutes, followed by yet
another from a Cawley flick from close range.
Church had a great chance to make it 3-0 and give the Blues plenty of breathing space before the break when he found space in the box to meet a Johnson free-kick after Hall had been fouled on the right side of the area. However, the ball bounced off the midfielder’s shoulder and wide.
The second half saw the Blues come out and sit much deeper and Concord struggle to break themdown for much of it.
Their first effort of note came on 62 minutes when Hammers loanee Miles fizzed a strike from distance just past the right post and did the same again on 77 minutes. A sign that the footballing gods may have just been with Bishop’s Stortford came on 79 minutes. A rocket of a shot from Concord’s James White cannoned off the crossbar and on to the back of Akurang. Rather than bounce back into the goal off the striker-turnedkeeper it bounced alongside him and he was able to gather.
The Blues’ first attack of the second half came a moment later when Michael Richens burst down the right and won a corner. From Johnson’s kick Church sent a header into the keeper’s arms.
Late shots from Sam Higgins and Tony Stokes sailed over the crossbar as Rangers ran out of time and hope.
