Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on February 12th
Due to bad weather Stortford have only played seven times on this date since the war and only one home game since 1966. A repeat of that result – a 9-1 win at home to Harlow – would be very welcome. Harlow were no push over that season finishing in mid-table and they drew 1-1 in the return match at Harlow but at Rhodes Avenue that day there was no holding Stortford. Chris Duggan got a hat trick and there were goals for Duley (2), Haywood (2), Neeves and Pat Duggan.
More recently there was a great 4-0 win at Dorchester in 2008. The win put Blues back in the play off positions and Dorchester were struggling – but a 4-0 win is still a 4-0 win.
Our first shot on goal came just before the quarter hour when Goodacre passed to Harris who shot wide from 6 yards. Just after the half way mark in the first half Harris made amends when after Edwards had done most of the work he chipped to Harris who scored from the same range as his earlier miss. Blues kept up the pressure and Pearson had two good chances including a one on one with Evans in the home goal but at half time it was still 1-0.
After offering no threat in the first half Dorchester nearly scored in the first minute of the second half as Awuah shot wide under pressure from Goodacre and Young. On 52 minutes Blues stamped their authority on the game as Deen scored with a great free kick into the top left hand corner. Mid-way through the second half a great move from Pearson and Mason set up Harris for another chance but the shot went wide. Shortly after Pearson scrambled the ball over the line as Evans dropped a corner from Deen to make the points safe for Stortford. Three minutes later Harris was the provider for Pearson to score his second and Stortford’s fourth. Pearson had at least two chances to complete a hat trick but the result of the game was no longer in doubt.
Previously in 2000 a 3-1 win over Barton Rovers brought the coincidence of our first ever visit to Barton le Clay and Peter Risley’s last game for Blues. Overall we have a good record on this date with 5 wins and a draw in the last 6 games.
