Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on February 9th
This is the time of year when the weather starts to bite and is the explanation for there only having been 11 fixtures on this date in Blues’ recorded history. Most recently we had a trip to North Wales to play Colwyn Bay in Conference North in 2013. On a wet day and a muddy pitch good football was hard to find in the first half. Two speculative shots from Reece Prestedge were our best efforts until Ricky Sappleton hit the bar on the stroke of half-time with a header. Bay also had their chances but there were no goals at the interval.
The second half saw the home side go ahead on 50 minutes as Callum Byrne lobbed a 30 yard shot over Carl Pentney and under the bar Blues struck back though with an equaliser from Seedy Njie just after the hour. The Blues player struck a low drive past the Welsh keeper from 20 yards. Ten minutes later a Harry Baker free kick set off a chain of events that ended with Curtis Ujah scoring from an acute angle to give Stortford a well deserved win on one of their longest away days for a league game.
Over the years we have twice played Dulwich Hamlet on this date, first in 1980 when they were challenging at the top of the Isthmian Premier Division and we were aiming from promotion to that Division. The occasion was a London Senior Cup tie but Hamlet were too strong for us winning 2-0. The Blues team that day was an interesting mixture of past and future with two members of our 74 Amateur Cup winning team playing (Martin Smith & Tony Bass) and younger players who would play in our 81 Trophy winning team like Joe Simmonds and Ian Smith.
Twenty two years later we were back at a much changed Champion Hill to play an Isthmian League Division 1 game. Hamlet were below mid-table but Blues were challenging for promotion. It was a run of drawn games that was threatening to cause problems for Blues and they seemed to have the perfect start when Al-James Hannigan headed in from a corner on 2 minutes. This was ruled out by the referee but 3 minutes later Blues had a legitimate goal from Trevor Paul. However two minutes later Ricky Browne equalised for Hamlet. The game settled down after that and the only other score was Paul again 2 minutes into the second half to give Blues the points. After the game Martin Hayes thought we could have won by more but after a number of drawn games he was happy to settle for all three points.
