Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on February 5th
In 2013 we had the relatively short trip (for that season) to the Birmingham area to play Solihull Moors in a Conference North match. We were just outside the relegation zone at the time while Solihull were in mid-table so we would have been hoping to get something out of the game.
In wet and windy conditions the first half was largely one to forget with few openings created and both sides guilty of misplaced passes. The Blues strung one or two useful moves together and early on Blair Sturrock struck a first time rising shot from 18 yards over the top after Matt Johnson and Ricky Sappleton had linked on the right. In the 20th minute a long ball forward into the box from Adam Bailey-Dennis was just too strong and keeper Jasbir Singh gathered a split second before Ricky Sappleton and at the other end a deep cross into the box from Dominic Langdon was an awkward one for Carl Pentney to deal with but the stopper held on to the ball low to the ground.
Blair Sturrock, who saw a lot of the action, had a low 25 yard strike in the 37th minute held by Singh and then two minutes later was narrowly wide with a header at the near post following a Reece Prestedge corner. Stortford continued to have the edge approaching the break and Prestedge’s 40 yard effort at an unguarded goal four minutes from the break was over the bar.
Matt Johnson left the action in the 44th minute when he appeared to pull a hamstring and the midfielder was replaced by Steve Cawley. In stoppage time it was the substitute who couldn’t quite get a connection to the ball after Blair Sturrock and Harry Baker had linked in an attack down the middle.
Early on after the restart Steve Cawley was off target with an effort from outside the box whilst Moors’ Omar Bogle had a header comfortably held by Carl Pentney. But then, in the 51st minute, Blues, playing against the wind and rain almost took the lead. An attack which started on the right involving Harry Baker, Alli Abdullahi and Ricky Sappleton saw the ball switched to the left edge of the box where skipper Reece Prestedge’s deflected shot was well saved by Jasbir Singh at his near upright.
The hosts went straight upfield and Ryan Beswick’s cross from the left deflected off of Adam Bailey-Dennis and Carl Pentney turned the ball over the bar at his near post. The resultant corner caused the Blues defence problems but from the clearance in the 53rd minute Stortford broke upfield to net what turned out to be the only goal of the game. Reece Prestedge took the ball over the half-way line before slipping Steve Cawey in space and the substitute’s angled shot was placed low past Singh’s left hand and inside the far post to put Blues in front.
Predictably after the reverse the Moors pushed forward and following a flag kick on the left from Ryan Beswick the ball was cleared out to Darryl Knights whose 16 yard shot Pentney held above his head. Then two successive inswinging corners from Beswick followed shortly after the midway stage of the half and the Stortford stopper did well with the threats with two confident punches away. Whenever they did get forward the Blues caused problems and with fifeteen minutes left Steve Cawley collecting a loose ball on the halfway line went on a solo run and crossed low from the left but Ricky Sappleton kicked thin air 12 yards from goal. Three minutes later Reece Prestedge picked up a loose cross-field pass from Reece Fleet and after advancing to the edge of the box saw his low drive turned round the post by Singh.
With time running out another corner from Ryan Beswick was cleared away only as far as Reece Fleet whose 20 yard blast was blocked away by the Blues’ defence. There was four minutes of stoppage time during which a Beswick free-kick was deflected for another corner and then shortly afterwards when substitute Jay Denny crossed towards the far post it was Beswick who somehow contrived to lift the ball thankfully over the bar from six yards range. There was still even time for the Blues to have doubled their lead as Steve Cawley again broke and supplied a pass inside this time for substitute Callum Webb whose close range shot deflected into the arms of Moors’ keeper Singh.
