Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on February 2nd
In 2016 we had a home game against Hemel Hempstead Town which was won 1-0 thanks to a 90th minute Mike Suarez goal.
This was our first win and first goal on this date as we previously had an uninspiring 0-0 draw against Stalybridge Celtic during our stay in Conference North and we failed to score as well in 2010 in a home game against Basingstoke Town.
One of the more memorable games played on this date was in 2008 against Eastbourne Borough. The Sports were in a promotion battle with Lewes at the time and at the beginning of February were still unbeaten away in the league. One ray of hope for Blues was that in the corresponding match in August 2007 we had led until late in the game and looked to have the measure of the opposition that day. Blues couldn’t have had a worse start however when after 3 minutes Andy Atkin headed towards goal. Young spilled the ball into the path of Nathan Crabb who made no mistake from within the 6 yard box. A few minutes later a shaky Stortford defence gave Pullen a free shot which he fortunately pulled wide. Before the quarter hour Blues had two good chances though as first Goodacre and then Essandoh headed wide, both crosses provided by Ahmed Deen. Mid-way through the first half Eastbourne had a penalty appeal turned down and while the visitors were appealing Stortford broke away and Pearson had a shot blocked. From the corner Fazackerley had a chance but couldn’t keep it down. Blues were now in charge although Matt Crabb did have a chance but narrowly lobbed the ball over both Young and the cross bar. Essandoh then limped off to be replaced by Harris who quickly won a free kick on the edge of the area. Deen’s great free kick went over the wall and into the far corner for the equaliser. Both sides had more chances but the first half ended 1-1.
Within 3 minutes of the second half Pearson sent in a cross which both Fazackerley and Harris narrowly failed to connect with. After that it was all Eastbourne for a while as Budd, Atkin, Pullen and then Matt Crabb had chances in swift succession. Having weathered the storm Pearson had two more chances for Blues both well saved by Hook before Harris scored the winner. Deen and Pearson combined to get the ball to Harris in the 6 yard box where he made no mistake with his first goal for Stortford. Eastbourne fought back well but it was Blues who finished stronger with Pearson missing another couple of chances.
Finally, an interesting friendly back in 1929. Dulwich Hamlet were recent FA Amateur Cup and Isthmian League winners so it was a major coup for a county league team like Stortford to get them to visit for a friendly game. It is not known at this distance in time what sort of team Hamlet fielded in a 4-4 draw but this sort of result may have helped Stortford get into senior amateur football in the Spartan League for the following season.
