Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 30th
For Blue’s last win on this date you have to go back to 1993 but that was our biggest win on this date too. In January 1993 while chasing promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division we beat Lewes 6-0 at Rhodes Avenue. At the time we were in sixth place and Lewes ninth and we had just lost our previous game to Purfleet (now Thurrock) so a big win was not expected.
Early on Stewart Ingielewicz skied a good chance but made up for it in the 16th minute when he rounded the keeper to score from a tight angle. When Marc Das had a shot cleared off the line five minutes later and then shaved the post we knew it would be a good day. Nicky White and Ingielewicz had shots saved while Gavin King had to be alert to protect Blues lead as Lewes mounted a rare attack. It wasn’t until the 38th minute that Stortford increased their lead when Lewes fullback Burnell denied Das with a handball. He was sent off and Edmonds scored the penalty. Before half time Hopkins hit the bar with a header and Walker had a shot saved so Blues were more than worth their 2-0 lead.
It only took seven minutes of the second half before White had another shot saved after beating three opponents while Ingielewicz just failed to reach a cross in the 55th minute. The floodgates finally opened when Burns was the provider for White to make it 3-0 in the 64th minute. Two minutes later it was 4 as Das scored after a nice one-two with Ingielewicz. Andy Walker finished a move involving Das and Ingielewicz in the 71st minute and when Burns scored from Das’s cross 3 minutes later Stortford had scored 4 goals in 10 minutes. Walker almost made it 7-0 before Blues cruised the rest of the game to an easy win. They ended up just missing promotion that season, although they had shown what they could do they were too inconsistent.
One significant debut on this date took place in 2007 when Craig Edwards made his first team debut which had been long delayed by injury. He didn’t complete the Herts Charity Cup tie and in what was a mixed reserve/first team he had little chance to show what he could do but he was to play an important part in the run in to the play offs that season.
