Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on December 22nd
There haven’t been as many games on this date as others due to a combination of weather and a reluctance to play mid-week games so close to the holiday season. We did have a big league win in 1973 on this date in our Amateur Cup winning season.
The game was a kind of changing of the guard as the balance of power shifted between the old fashioned amateurs of Corinthian Casuals, Amateur Cup Finalists in the 50’s and the up and coming Bishop’s Stortford, previous seasons Amateur Cup Semi-Finalists. The away match against Corinthian Casuals as recently as 1972 had been played at The Oval cricket ground and they were still without a permanent home. Stortford meanwhile were gelling very nicely as a team and having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Dagenham would not be beaten again until the following May. At first it seemed as though it might be one of those days as the first 20 minutes saw plenty of chances for Stortford but a bad miss by Dear and the woodwork kept the game goalless. New signing Murphy and Dear both hit the bar with headers in this time. In the 35th minute the pressure finally paid off as Bass made the most of a free header to score the first goal. It was a real quality goal that made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time. Bass crossed from the right and Murphy hit a first time volley from outside the area into the top of the net.
Notwithstanding some anxious moments from the visitors forwards they seemed a weak team and at 2-0 Stortford didn’t seem likely to let this game slip. Three more goals followed in the first 16 minutes of the second half before Blues relaxed with the game won. In the 49th minute following a goal mouth scramble from a corner Paul Webb scored through the melee. Shortly afterwards Dear found Bass from a corner and the England Amateur player scored again with his head. On the hour Dear was given plenty of time to compose himself and score from an acute angle to make it 5-0. After that Stortford were content to play out the game but did score again when Leakey found Bass unmarked again for his hat trick. Casuals didn’t give up and Reece forced a save from Moore at the foot of the post, but this Stortford team didn’t give up a consolation goal easily even at 6-0.
Although there have been fewer games on this date, it does seem to favour Blues with no defeats since 1951 apart from a friendly against Barnet in 2001. Interestingly while Dwight Gayle scored against Harrogate in the corresponding fixture last season, his dad Devon Gayle scored twice in our last home league game played on this date against Leyton-Wingate in 1990. A goal from a young Leo Fortune-West helped to give us a 3-1 win that day.
