Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on December 16th

Not many big games on this date just before Christmas, local derbies are usually saved up for just after Christmas rather than just before. However in 2006 we met St Albans City in an entertaining FA Trophy first round game during our neighbours one season in what was then the Conference National.
The game didn’t take long to warm up. Within two minutes Ram Marwa should have done better with his shot that was easily saved by Andy Young. Blues’ response resulted in their opening goal. With four minutes on the clock, Max Porter crossed from the right to Ashley Fuller whose shot looked off target but ricocheted off a Saints defender to Danny Morgan. He placed his strike from eight yards into the City goal leaving keeper Paul Bastock with no chance.
The Saints enjoyed most of the possession over the following 20 minutes without threatening to score. Blues were content to counter and use Morgan’s pace to terrorise the heart of the opposition’s defence. This was demonstrated on 16 minutes when a superb pass through the middle from Porter found Morgan splitting the City central defenders. His first touch was perfect, but his second, a shot, was lame and Bastock saved easily when Morgan really should have scored.
Blues did extend their lead though on 20 minutes. Jack Midson’s shot was only parried low by Bastock and Roy Essandoh slid in bravely to force the ball into the net from close range. Morgan nearly made it 3-0 five minutes later when he beat the City defence for pace and shot just wide from inside the penalty box with Bastock beaten.
Saints halved the lead on the half hour mark. Ex-Blue Hakim shielded the ball before sliding a pass to Lee Clarke who, beating Michael Stanbrook to the ball, poked the ball to the right of Young and into an empty net.
Before half time, Tom Davis came closest for Saints to equalising with a shot from 30 yards that Andy Young dealt with at the second attempt. It would have been rough justice as Blues had been the more incisive so far.
Blues came out fired up for the second half and, early on, came close twice to extending their lead. Firstly Roy Essandoh should have headed in a lovely whipped in cross from Dave Collis but his effort went wide. Then Ashley Fuller struck from over 30 yards only to see his shot fly over the crossbar. Essandoh went close again just after an hour. He met Richard Howell’s acute cross and headed towards the goal only to see Lee Flynn clear off his line.
It wasn’t too long though before Morgan grabbed his second. HOn 71 minutes he raced onto a ball from midfield, beating the oncoming Bastock. With plenty still to do, Morgan steadied himself and lobbed the ball into the goal with a couple of defenders rushing in to clear, but fortunately to no avail.
The ever dangerous Davis tested Young with a shot that the keeper managed to push wide before Saints threw their dice for the final time making a double substitution that resulted in a three-pronged attack. This gave Saints the impetus and saw Blues under some intense pressure for much of the remainder of the game. But City could muster just the one goal, the result of an unfortunate slice of slack defending that finished with Paul Goodacre turning the ball into his own net. They came closest to securing an undeserved replay with two minutes remaining when Lee Clarke sent a header just wide.
