A LOOK BACK AT BLUES’ GAMES ON JANUARY 5th

By Andrew Cornell

A combination of bad weather and a lack of midweek games so soon after the holiday games means there have been very few games played on this date, only 8 going back as far as 1900. There has only been one game at Woodside Park on this date, a 2-5 defeat to Guiseley in Conference North in 2013, so it is worth going back as far as 1957 for the previous home game which was a remarkable match.

We faced local neighbours Ware at home, having been involved in a 6-6 draw at Dagenham the previous week. Obviously goals were expected, but nothing like the Dagenham game surely? Both teams were attacking and creating chances from the outset with Kearsley turning away a shot from Cliss for an early Ware corner. It was the home side who took the lead in the 12th minute though as Hussey took advantage of a defensive mix up to find Horton who made no mistake. A brilliant save by Humphrey from Francis prevented Stortford from doubling their lead before Brock equalised for Ware after receiving a long ball in an apparently off-side position. Shortly after a good move down the right found Chatt to give Ware the lead at 2-1. Hussey and Yates were playing well though and Stortford soon had Ware on the back foot. In the 25th minute Francis equalised with a great solo goal to make it 2-2. It was all Stortford now and Humphreys kept Ware in the game, most notably with a brilliant full length save from Adamson. He was beaten 3 minutes from half time though when Yates went round 2 defenders before scoring with a dropping shot – 3-2 to Stortford at half time.

The second half continued in the same vein with Yates scoring almost immediately with a shot which Humphreys got a hand on but could not stop. Soon after Horton shot against the post, but any disappointment was short lived as Hussey scored off the underside of the bar. Humphreys gathered the ball but the linesman confirmed the ball had gone over the line – 5-2 to Stortford. There was then a turning point as Ware, who had by no means given up won a penalty thanks to a handball by Atkinson. Greenhill scored, but Kearsley in the Stortford goal injured his hand. NO subs at all in those days, so not only did Stortford have an injured goalkeeper, but if he had gone off they would have been down to 10 men AND without a keeper. Ware were encouraged but Kearsley made good saves at first from Chatt and then from Isaac’s header. Brock scored though after Kearsley had failed to hold a shot and the score was 5-4 to Stortford. This was followed by an equaliser for Chatt after bad marking and with 13 minutes to go Ware were ahead 6-5 as Chatt combined with Brock for the latter to complete his hat trick. Stortford retaliated and yates made a great pass to Francis to score another equaliser. Just when it looked as though we would have a second successive 6-6 draw Chatt scored the winner and completed his own deserved hat trick – 7-6 to Ware.
