Bishops checkmate Kings for first win – pics aded
A goal in each half enabled the Blues to register their first Evo-Stik South Premier and so move up the table to 17th place.
Stortford included midfielder Tyrique Hyde-Skerritt on loan from Dagenham & Redbridge whilst Sam Hatton was making his home debut.
A lively start saw home keeper Tyler McCarthy in early action and Hatton going close with a header at the other end in the 12th minute.
The Blues first goal in the 26th minute came when Darren Foxley ran through the middle after collecting Dipo Akinyemi’s through pass and beat keeper Ross Hampton with a low drive. It was Stortford’s first goal in almost six hours of football.
Stortford finished the half well but Kings exerted early pressure on the restart and McCarthy produced a fine save to deny Ollie Cox from a free-kick in the 51st minute.
It was Stortford who netted the next goal. Winning a corner in the 64th minute Hatton’s flag kick was met by a header on the far side by Joe Robinson and when the ball fell near the six yard box Jason Williams, who had returned in this game to the side after injury, forced it into the net.
With the visitors having to push forward to try to get back in the match the Blues had opportunities to extend their lead in the wet conditions but in the end had to settle for a victory by a two goal margin.
